Hackers Vs Crackers

This is a list of sites of Hackers and Crakers of varying degrees of skill and integrity.

Just in case you were wondering...

Although most of us are familiar with the term hackers, at present, few have heard the term Crackers. Hackers "are people who simply love playing with computers". Hackers break into a system for fun, in order to point out potential security risks, or just because they are bored. They see it as a challenge and as an educational experience. Crackers, on the other hand, is the "malicious subset of the hacker community". They break in, in order to wreak havoc, steal information and classified data, or commit fraud. For a large percentage of hackers, the accomplishment of security break-ins is a game of one-upmanship. Egos and the ability to brag about their abilities is the key to their addiction to hacking.

I have only selected four sites as they all have links off them and give a good cross section, enjoy but beware they could be hacking you as you snoop around.

7thSphere     About the site:    Nice and Professional looking site, easy to navigate and good information. However the webmaster is a relative newbie, but I suspect learning fast. The site also has a section called "Slackers inc." this is a large file with essays on a large array of topics just waiting to be down loaded to use as your own. Nothing on Security though and they are mostly "Americanized." The other draw back is a lot of the links aren’t maintained.

Cosmos' Underground    About the site:  This site is great for the amateur hacker with a vast array of links to pages where you can easily download the program required to do your hacking. The site is also part of a web ring so it has many related site links.

Rsnake's Hacking Corner   About the site:    The opening paragraph says it all, that and the information it holds. Here is the opening paragraph:- Truth be known, I am NOT a hacker, so don't EVEN start saying that I am. Let me make that clear off the bat. If anything, I am an ethical hacker. I mess around with computers PURELY to see if it can be done so that later in life industry will hire me to make sure punks like me can't do what I do. I don't even look at files if I break in, I don't copy, delete or break. Sometimes I even have permission to try... Got it? As Silicon Toad once said to me, "I know what I know, and I do what I do. If you want to call me a hacker, then so be it."

Switchroom     About the site:    For all you want-to-be Hackers and Crackers out there, this site details what happens when you get caught. Kevin Poulsen details his whole story to any that wish to view it. Criminal and a danger to the community! or just a victim of misguided quest for the truth. You be the judge and steep inside.
